Brendan:
According to "The Baby Name Book" by Louise Nicholson,
"Brendan: the Irish St Brendan the Voyager (468-578) founded the monastry at Clonfert in Galway, but the hugelt popular 10th century tale, Brendan's Voyage, has less credibility. Translated into several languages, it spread his fame throughout Europe as a monk who, among other adventures, sailed to the Land of Promise in the Atlantic. In Celtic mythology, Bendegeit Bran, 'Bran the Blessed' was a god of enormous strength and size, who possessed supernatural powers ans was a harpist and poet; his cauldron could bring the dead back to life. The legend of Brennan of the Moor, an Irish Robin Hood figure, further popularised the name. It remains a favourite in Ireland. Variants: Bramwell, Bran, Brand, Brandon, Brant, Breandan, Brenain, Brend, Brenden, Brendin, Brendon, Brennan, Brondan."
Also seen translatead as Raven, the Celtic wise bird, or, for the Norse and old English, Sword. We prefer Raven.
Raven Son
I would give ...
I would give my love
to shield, defend you
from the encircling dark
I would give my body
to feed your hunger
in a ravenous world
I would give my heart's water
to quench your thirst
in the blazing desert
Wise bird,
spread your wings
into the future, knowing
my love is always there
beside you.
