Team Work on a National Level
.....anybody out there prefer POST cereal products, suddenly?.....
Background Information
It all started with a Kelloggs Bran Flakes commercial, first aired during (of all times!)
during the week of April 19th.... what we know to be National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.
Sitting there, comfortably, watching TV during the "Family Hour" before "Prime Time" and what do some of us see?
A commercial featuring two firefighters discussing Bran Flakes versus a danish roll
and the one having cereal mentions he's "starting to look like a dispatcher"
-- as he chuckles and pinches his waistline to illustrate the comment.
At the end of the commercial, they're both enjoying Bran Flakes,
and the danish roll is not discarded, but
"saved for the dispatcher."
Well. Some of us were startled, some of us were offended, and some folks acknowledged the intended humor, but surely didn't like
to have an entire job classification in the Public Safety community labelled as "fat."
I know I'm not the only one who saw it and got ticked off with Kelloggs for promoting a stereotype in addition to their healthy breakfast foods.
I'm sure there were many people who reacted to this unflattering characterization.
Here's what I did:
The Break Room has a link to a "fun" Kelloggs site, so I knew they were online....
- Used my favorite search engine to find a Kelloggs site inviting e-mail messages.
- Composed a thoughtful message expressing my displeasure with this particular advertising ploy.
- Copied the site's URL and distributed it to the 100 recipents of the AOL Dispatch Chat session logs.
- Re-distributed a message one of the recipients sent me with the Kelloggs Consumer phone line number.
- Called the Consumer Line to personally express my unhappiness, in a reasonable tone of voice.
- Contacted the editors and managers of:
- Dispatch Monthly
- PowerPhone
- 9-1-1 Magazine
- Public Safety Communications Training Specialists
and waited a while.....
Kelloggs apologized!
