Welcome to issue two of the Leo. I am glad to say that since last week, the distribution list has swelled from some 30 people to just under 100 ! For this reason, I am now downloading issues of the Leo at the weekend as it is a lot cheaper then for myself. I am really pleased with the response I have received, and would like to thank everyone who emailed me. Isn't it great to think that even though someone lives an entirely different culture, they are on the same 'wavelength' because they are a Leo?
A lot of Leos have asked me to begin the serialisation of Leo Club Growth, which begins this issue. It will take a long time to go over it all, and some of the points you may know already, but I hope that it is helpful.
"You asked for more subscribers... Here are some addresses of Leos in Finland" - Juha Wallius, Finland
"Just received a copy of the newsletter you put out - I think it's a great concept. An unofficial forum where Leos can discuss issues without the delays and political influences of the 'official' Lions channels. Being email it's also much more timely than Leo World" - Tony Chapman, Tasmania
"Thanks very much for the first issue.....I'm very glad there's a new LEO get-together place on the internet" - Wojtek Felendzer, Poland
"Thank you. We are very interested to contribute to THE LEO" - Chen Ho Chwen, Malaysia
"Go ahead with the newsletter" - Christian J. Mayr, Austria
"It's a really great idea to start this LEO-Online Issue"- Thomas Treutler, Germany
Leoism is entering an exciting few years, and I can see major changes in our organisation in the next few years. Communicating over the Internet may be a small part of Leoism now, BUT it is the beginning of our organisation working internationally. I predict within a few months, we will be doing international projects and recruitment using the internet. YOU are lucky - you will be at the forefront of the future of Leoism, but it is important to remember that not every Leo has net access - and it is up to YOU to pass this information onto other Leos.
That doesn't neccessarily mean sending a copy of the Leo to every Leo Club in your district, although I know they are doing this in Tasmania - It means that you share your knowledge you have gained via the internet, that you offer to post other's articles, that you offer to ask other's questions. Leos is about SERVICE, but to our fellow leos as well as our our communities. For example, Leo Club growth will be serialised within the Leo over the next few months - It is importnat that you use this information, not only to make your club stronger, but other clubs stronger. Please inform your Districts & Multiple Districts, that you are available regarding the Internet - and let them use you for whatever they need.

The whole aim of LCG is membership gain, and whilst new clubs are important, it is very important not to overlook those clubs that are presently struggling. Leo Club Growth has three distinct areas, and these must be all covered in order that it succeeds.
The First area is retention, which we will begin on next week. This area is concerned with the keeping of existing members and clubs. It is important that this is delt with first as if an exisiting club has problems, just gaining new members will not solve this problem. I liken it to a sink. If the sink is not plugged - putting more water in the sink will not solve the problem. In this area we look at the whole concept of a club meeting, and how the President's responsibilities also cover the welfare of exisitng members. We look at how to put spark into a dying club, how to give the club motivation, and how many of their problems are cuased by lack of communication. This will be the largest and most detailed section and will take a long time to cover, however, it is vital to Leo Clubs.
The second area is publicity. It is imprtant that clubs maintain a high profile in their local communities. This is mainly done through local newspapers, although this idea canalso apply to national publicity for a District/Multiple District as a whole. Without publicity, the public do not know what Leos is about, and hence the job of recruitment is a lot harder.
The final area is recruitment. This could be recruitment in the sense of increasing membership in an exisitng club, or in the sense of setting up a new Leo Club. This section is mainly a bringing together of the ideas from the previous areas, and will be comparatively very short.
I expect the information will take a good many months to be completely distributed - as there is a lot to discuss. Again, as with anything in The Leo, readers are always invited to send in their responses and views. Afterall, 100 peoples opinions are always better than just 1 person's.
Whilst this is in my MD, it was still a 4 hour car journey to get there. I went with my friend Alf, from the neighbouring club of Farnborough, and although it was a long way away, with myself being an MD Officer, and Alf being a frequent visitor to Club charters up and down the country, we knew we would know most people there.
As we arrived early, we parked Alf's car at the overnight accomodation, which was a Scout Hut, and walked to the Charter Venue which was at a Cricket Club. The Theme was 'Bad Taste' and so many people were wearing very strange clothes. The charter was a casual night, with a disco and a bar. Myself and Alf split up, chatting to all the people who were there including the MD President Nigel Devereaux, MD Vice President Jemma Prior, and District 105BS Leo President Jon Toon. However, as is the case with most charters in MD105, everyone mixed as Leos and friends, and had you not known it would have been impossible to spot the district and Md officers from the rest of the Leos. The music was the normal mix of Pop, Dance and Rock.
I spent most of the night talking to a prospective member from the prospective club of Chester, which is presently trying to form. As normal I find myself doing 'business' more at charters than at meetings, but I am pleased that Leos do approach me with their problems.
After putting up with Nigel's jokes we went to the overnight accomodation, where everyone was hungry, so Jon, his girlfriend Kelly & myself went to a nearby motorway service stop and bought loads of food and cans of soft drink for everyone who gave us money. As usual it was around 2-3am before we got any sleep.
