"City Olympian Dies In Dallas After Illness"
A Lynchburg native who was twice an Olympic gold medal winner has died in Dallas. Retired Army Sgt. Major, Mack Salmon, 70, died Monday at his home after a long illness. He was an expert marksman, winning his gold medals as coach of the U.S. pistol team in 1972 in Munich and 1976 in Montreal.Born in Lynchburg, he joined the military at age 17 and retired after 29 years of service. He won National Pistol Championships in 1957 and 1966, and was honored those years with the Military Performance Award.
His survivors include two brothers in Lynchburg, John B. Salmon and Clarence Salmon.
