"When the first
baby laughed for
the first time, the
laugh broke into
a thousand pieces
and they went
skipping about
and that was the
beginning of fairies."
Sir James Matthews Barrie
1860-1937
What is a "Fairy"?
According to one dictionary, a Fairy is an imaginary being
who is supposed to have magical powers.
A faery is a tiny being with wings (such as butterfly wings, dragonfly
wings, etc.),
that looks like a person. They are said to have magical powers,
such as the ability to change the seasons, weather, or other features
of nature.

Where did the word "Fairy" come from?
Fairy comes from Faerie
(French)
Faerie comes from Fa'ae
(Gallic)
Fa'ae comes from Fata
(Latin, meaning the fates)
Fa'ae or fae or fay all mean about the same thing: a group
of special magical beings that look a little human with
powers that go from good to evil. That's why you read
about both the good fairy in the Wizard of Oz and the
wicked Witch of the North. But here all we care about are the good ones.

Fairies are mythical beings of folklore and romance. They are
often depicted as diminutive winged humans with magic powers. The
tooth fairy exhanges presents, usually coins, for teeth left out
or under one's pillow at night. Fairy godmothers are protective beings,
like guardian angels.
Fairies should not be confused with gnomes, who are
also mythical diminutive humans but are deformed and live
underground. Pixies, on the other hand, might be
considered a type of fairy known for their cheerful nature and
playful mishievousness. An elf might be thought of as a
big pixie, often depicted as a mischievous dwarf, such as the
Irish leprechaun known for his pranks but also believed to know
where treasure is hidden. Elves are sometimes depicted as helpers
of magicians, e.g., Santa's helpers.
All in all... a fairy is a very mystical creature in the eyes
of most people.
