Carla Emory's: The Encylopedia of Country Living

My MOST FAVORITE BOOK!!!!!!! In the whole world. ;-)

Carla goes into EVERYTHING. If you want to get back to the basics...this is the book to buy. I have purchased several editions of her books, from the beginnings; where Carla and her friends went around and around a table to "put" the homemade book together to the later edition I have now. IMHO This book is the Homesteaders Bible. She covers, finding and buying your land, learning what you need to homestead, the "shocking" truth of all the "goodies" (LOL) you'll have to (or need to) live without.
Carla goes into livestock on the homestead, taking care of yourself if you get sick, homestead cooking (yummy!!!!), making your own soap, candles, buildings, gardening etc. etc.
It is a HUGE book and worth its weight double in Gold (IMHO). City-dwellers who long for the country life and simplicity can use this book too. One of the best bread recipes I ever baked was Carla's. And reading about her and her family dumping the huge amount of bread dough on the table to knead it...just made the book MORE wonderful and homey.
Definently check this book out if you are even considering going back to nature. You NEED it. ;-) I could NOT live without my copy...had to buy my MIL her own copy, so she wouldn't keep borrowing mine. LOL

Other great books I own and love:
I'm into soapmaking now and this was my first:
The Complete Soapmaker

Norma Coney's book is a great beginners book to start you on your way to soapmaking. She has many wonderful recipes using herbs and even fruits (like strawberry, kiwi, carrots, even lettuce!) in your homemade soaps. Norma also has detailed photos to help you "see" what making soap looks like. A wonderful starter book in this great hobby.

This book is a really great soapmakers reference:
The Soapmaker's Companion

Susan Miller Cavitch goes into more comprehensive details of recipes, how to's, ingredients, and even a great section on marketing your soaps. Anyone fascinated with making their own soaps, needs to own this book. ;-)

If you want to learn more about EO's (Essential Oils) I recommend these books. If you are going to use EO's you NEED to get some kind of reference books to guide you. EO's can be VERY dangerous if not used right.
The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy

This one is my favorite. Valerie Ann Worwood goes into details about using and handling Essential Oils. She has over 600 safe, natural recipes using EO's. Valerie shows you how to safely use EO's in your beauty products (like my soap); how to use EO's in your home as cleaners and "smell-gooders". She also recommends oils for your health if you are stressed out or sick and lots of other uses for these wonderful natural plant materials.

Another good book for Essential Oils that I own is:
The Essential Oils Book

Colleen K. Dodt does a wonderful job of making a small reference book for essential oils. Also includes blends to use in your beauty products, for your health and in your natural cleaning.

Other great books I recommend and own. If I review them all...you'll be hear all day. LOL But I will break them up later and give you details on these too. If you'd like to know more about these now, you can email me at TXJune. I'll be happy to tell ya all about them. ;-)
Here's some of the other great books I own. I have a huge library of books. These are just some of my fav's. I could go on and on and on and on..... LOL ;-)
The Complete Medicinal Herbal

This book lets you know how to use your natural herbs. Even how to make your own herbal oils to use in your beauty products.

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs

Lots of info from growing your own herbs, harvesting these herbs and using them in your own home. From planting to drying to mixing, this is a great reference book on herbs.
