So, why is my web page called Cyper Porch? My fondest memories while growing up were of my front porch. The front porch is where all the neighbors gathered to sit and talk. While the kids would play out in the yard, we knew we were always watched by whoever was sitting on the porch. At night when it was dark, the yellow light-bulb would always be my beacon for safety.
In today's world, we don't take the time to relax, sit, put our feet up and ponder life. I think we need to take the time. Sit on the porch with friends and neighbors, be with our children. This might involve turning off the TV (gasp!) and even the computer (bigger gasp!).
If you can't stand to just sit, get a good book you've been meaning to read or read to your kids , take care of your houseplants, get out the checker board and play checkers with your kids. While your reading this page you can go on over to Amazon On-line bookstore and check out all the books. Did you know NASA has an article proving that houseplants make great air filters? You'll have to go get the checker game yourself.
OK! OK! Before you start email'ing me with "Get Real Stupid"; THIS is the reason for the Cyber Porch. I know that in today's society with crime and people afraid to even go outside; let alone sit on a porch, YOU CAN MAKE FRIENDS. Join the Cyber communities. Go on-line. Join an on-line university and take some classes (you might learn something too). Learn IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and chat with people with interests like yours. There are thousands of channels (on IRC) to choose from. Join a listserve. A listserve is groups of folks with the same interests who use email to communicate. I belonged to an adoption listserve that is for adoptees and birthparents searching for each other. Or just join a community like Geocities and get out and "walk" your neighborhoods. There are lots of opportunities to make friends on-line. And kids can make friends too. As parents it's our responsibility to keep the kido's monitored.
Hey, I'll keep the yellow light-bulb on for you if you get lost. :-)
