MASSENGILL

MASSENGALE-COBB-THOMAS FAMILIES: Note: This Thomas family is not known to be related to the Dudley Thomas branch of the Eppler-Miles-Thomas family. The Massengale (or Massengill - variant spelling) family traces back to Gilbert Morsengill, of Whitby, Yorkshire, England, whose WILL was dated 1564. His wife, Elizabeth's WILL was dated 1599. Gilbert's son, Anthony, had a son named Gilbert, who was the father of Daniel Massengill I, who came to America in 1645, settling in Charles City Colony in 1653. The next three generations were, respectively, Daniel Massengill II, James Massengill I and James Massengill II. There was probably still another generation before we come to Henry Massengill who, according to "Tennessee Cousins", was a descendant of Daniel Massengill. The direct line of descent of Henry from Daniel has not been established. The known record indicates that Henry Massengill was born and reared in North Carolina; that he married Mary Cobb, sister of William Cobb; and that the family moved to the Watauga River settlement in Tennessee in 1769. All three of their sons are said to have served in the American Armies during the Revolutionary War. In one account, Henry is listed as Henry Massengill, Sr., although none of the sons is shown to be Henry, Jr. It is likely that HAL was Henry, Jr. The following data from pension rolls show positively that two of the three sons definitely had military service in the Revolution. The 1832 List of Pensioners shows Michael Massengill, age 78, who had served in the "Virginia Line", drawing his pension in Grainger County, Tennessee. Henry Massengill b. North Carolina m.
