James R. Taylor was born and raised in Huntington, West Virginia and earned bachelors and masters degrees in Psychology from Marshall College. After teaching Psychology there for three years and working as a clinical psychologist in Iowa, he obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological School, and served as a pastor both while in seminary and later at the Summit Avenue Baptist Church in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1961, James Taylor came to Rocky as the Director of Guidance and Assistant Professor of Psychology. Before retiring in 1994, he had served as professor, Dean, Dean of Admissions, Academic Dean, Registrar, and Director of Summer Session, often filling as many as three positions at a time. Throughout his illustrious and busy career at Rocky Mountain College, he also served his church and community. His work as an interim pastor, as a member of the Montana Association of Churches board, on the General Board of the American Baptist Churches, and as President of the Big Sky Area of the American Baptist Churches attest the calling of his faith. He also gave generously of his time to the Billings School Board, Billings Studio Theatre, and served as Treasurer and Chair of the Yellowstone County Democratic Committee. For his long and distinguished record of service to the Rocky Mountain College and the Billings Community, James Taylor will be awarded the degree Doctor of Public Service today.
