My ancestors connections to Wayne County are as follows: William STIDHAM (1771-1853) brought his family to Wayne County about 1820 from Delaware. His daughter, Elizabeth (1806-1877) married Isaac JEFFERIS (1804-1840) on 8 June 1825 in Wayne County. All three of these individuals died in Wayne County.

Ann SHARPLESS Carter Jefferis (1761-1844), already twice a widow, arrived within a few years of the Stidhams with her close-to-grown children, including Isaac. It's unclear whether they moved directly from Chester County, Penn., with her husband, Abraham JEFFERIS (1763-1822) dying enroute or they actually settled for a time in Clinton County, Ohio, where Abraham died at the home of a daughter by his first marriage. Isaac was disciplined by the Quakers for marrying outside his faith. Ann died in Wayne County.

Elijah Iles KERLIN (1809-1901), his wife Milly Milinda SANDS (1803-1879), and the two oldest of their eventual 11 children moved to Wayne County in the early 1830s from Washington County, Tenn. They lived the rest of their lives in Wayne County. Their son and my great-great grandfather, William Kendrick KERLIN (1832-1903), married Hannah Bennett JEFFERIS (1830-1909), daughter of Isaac JEFFERIS and Elizabeth STIDHAM, on 1 Dec. 1853 in Wayne County. William and Hannah moved their family to Darke County, Ohio, in 1865 and spent the rest of their lives there.

My great grandmother, Anna Elizabeth KERLIN Seitz (1854-1918), daughter of William and Hannah was born in Wayne County and lived the first 10 or 11 years of her life there. I have also seen references to her briefly practicing osteopathy in Richmond, Ind., but don't know the exact period. She became a doctor of osteopathy in the late 1890s, more than 15 years after her husband died, and she practiced in several places before returning home to Greenville for the last several years of her life.

Thanks,

Have located Beverly. Looking for Hazel Esther, aka Sue. Hazel Esther was born May 27, 1932. She was my mother...disappeared in 1972, never heard from her or found her after extensive searching. Also need info for Indian Medical Benefit Card or Roll Number for my children. Would also like info on anything or anyone relating to any of this info. If someone knew any of these people or the orphanage, please contact me. Thank you very much.

Am researching the REID family back through Wayne County and surrounding areas, before 1900. I know Reid's a very very popular name in and around Richmond, and I hope to use that to advantage. So far I have: Sterling P. Reid b.1898 Clarence C. Reid b.1868; blacksmith Patterson Reid b. ??? Other tidbits I have: * Somewhere in the mix is a Bombauer or Baumbauer, Ellibee, and Little * We're "the side of the family that didn't get the money" (to quote my Grandfather) * My Grandfather had strong suspicions that we've origins in Scotland, but was unsure how far back I'm just now discovering all the geneology resources on the net. Combining those tools with any leads I might get here is a great first step. Many thanks,

George Stevenson Mon, 02 Jun 1997 22:01:11

My Stevenson's migrated to Wayne Co about 1807 or so from Woodford Co, KY. There were still Stevenson's living in Wayne Co about 1910 from the original family. I have the book 1st Land Entry Book of Wayne County, IN by Arnold Dean 1994 and would be willing to do lookups if you want to list my name and email address. I have added some information to the book description that follows for the Stevenson's that moved to Wayne Co. George Stevenson was one of 5 brothers living in MD 3 of whom migrated to Woodford Co, KY about 1790. George and his family then moved to Wayne Co about 1807. The book below is really about his younger brother Benjamin's family, they later moved to Putnam Co, IN about 1824. With the permission of the author's descendents and the kind assistance of the RootsWeb folks for storage, a scanned copy of STEVENSON Family History from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Worcester Co, MD to Woodford Co, KY to Putnam Co, IN is available for downloading via anonymous FTP from
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/STEVBOOK.EXE.

This executable requires Windows. Double clicking on the executable launches a Common Ground viewer which will bring up the Digital Paper file containing the book. The executable takes 877KB including viewer and book. This book lists STEVENSON's in Worcester Co, Maryland from about 1700-1790, Woodford Co, KY 1790-1824, and then Indiana from early 1800's. Nice description of Colonial Maryland and early Presbyterians in Maryland. Portions of a woman's diary about the trail from Maryland to the Kentucky frontier about 1790. Other surnames mentioned are CROPPER, COX, LITTLETON, WHITTINGTON, FASSITT, CAMPBELL, NELSON.

EDMAN family of Wayne Co. IN. According to a family bible belonging to my great grandparents (Charles McGOWAN and Elizabeth VOGELGESANG), Charles mother was Christianna EDMAN. The bible says she was born on March 20, 1845, in Wain (sic) Co. Indianna. I am presuming that "Wain" should be "Wayne." She married Samuel McGOWAN (b. June 9, 1836, in Knox Co. Ohio) on Oct 29, 1865 (place not given). I am not sure when they moved, but their son, Charles, was born in Topeka, KS, on May 19, 1871. Charles and Elizabeth were married in Lyndon, Oasge Co., Ks, on March 12, 1894. The witnesses were W.D. EDMAN and Lenora EDMAN. I would appreciate any information on any of these folks.

BENDEL, GOLDMAN, GRAY- Harry Louis BENDEL was the son of Edward Henry BENDEL and Carrie GOLDMAN. He was born in Richmond on 21 August 1867. Mary BENDEL was the daughter of Harry Louis BENDEL and Laura GRAY. She was born in Richmond on 20 July 1887. The only problem is that their families lived in Jeffersonville, Fayette County, Ohio at the times of the birth of each. So why were they both born in Richmond. There is no indication of illegitimacy since marriages preceded births.

David M. RICHEY (b. c1828, Ohio; d. 25 Jan 1904, Wayne Co., IN, bur. Earlham Cemetery, Wayne County), m. 1849 to Rebecca C. TILLSON in Preble County, OH. Their children: (1)Everett RICHEY (b. c1851) m. Alice J. BOAK (2)Walter RICHEY (b. c1852) m-1. Mary J. BEELER; m-2 Mattie BORTON An Everett A. and Walter M. RICHEY operated "Richey Brothers" drug store in Richmond, IN, during the late 1800's. Their partnership was dissolved in 1877 when Everett retired. They may have been a different generation than the above mentioned Everett and Walter, who would have been too young to "retire", but were related to this family, which operated two other drug stores, one in New Paris, OH, and one in Muncie, IN. Does anyone have info on this RICHEY family? I have additional info. to share.

I have a list of surnames that includes people who married into my great grandfather, Caleb KING's family. They are from a family history that he wrote between 1881-1888. I will include them here. They seem to be all Wayne Cty residents during the 19th century and all settled around Richmond and Centerville. In no particular order: Roundtree Jackson Eliason Jones Cheesman Boyd Medearis Bond Townsend Myres Stevens Smith Martin Staatts Langston Maxwell Griffin Russel Hayworth Cook Wickersham Common Harvey Maudlin
Some of these names he simply mentions as friends, others are spouses who married into the family, still others he mentions as owning land. Whatever info I have, I'll be glad to share. Liz DeFeo

Carl SWAIN is my great grandfather. His death certificate lists him as being the son of Job SWAIN and Adry BENNETT. Carl was born around 1880 and died in 1944. He is buried at Economy Cemetery. There is a question about whether or not Carl's father is John SWAIN or Job SWAIN. Can somebody help me with a marriage date between either of these SWAINS and Adry BENNETT? I have no dates or info on this side of my family beyond Carl. Thank you
