Philip his wife Susannah (we don't know Susannah's last name) and their family lived in what is now Rockingham County, Virginia. This county was created out of Augusta Co. in 1777. It is located in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The Shenandoah Mountain range runs north and south and forms a natural state boundary between the two counties. These compose the "Waggy Country" in which we are interested here.
According to Morton in A History of Pendleton County, West Virginia, Waggys settled on the South Branch of the Potomac River, some eight miles above Franklin in what is now Pendleton Co., West Virginia. He gives the year 1796 as the approximate time.
There is a branch of Beaver Creek flowing through a beautiful little valley which is known as Waggy Creek. The road parallel this creek is Waggy Creek Rd. and is marked as such. Undoubtedly this is the stream referred to as Howell’s Branch. G.K. Harnsberger, a surveyor of Rockingham County, said that as far as he could determine, Howell’s Branch is the part of Beaver Creek that comes out of Wheelbarger Hollow. Above Ottobine (Va.), Beaver Creek is presently called Woods Creek but on old county maps that part is called Waggy Creek. You may recall the Waggy Creek Rd. sign on the first page. Beaver Creek is southwest of Harrisonburg and west of the town of Bridgewater, Va. As far as is known, no one has tried to pinpoint the exact location of Philip Waggy's land along this stream. As he lived here around twenty-nine years and had a large family, it is understandable that he became a well known resident.
A descendant of Daniel Waggy, Wayne Waggy still lives in the Ottobine area, and was wondering if he knew where the homestead may be.
A reference from CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF LICKING CO., OHIO; states Philip served in the Revolutionary war and was the father of eleven children—five boys and six girls. John is mentioned as the oldest son. Other children were: Jacob, Philip Jr., Abraham, Isaac, Anna, Mary, Catherine, Susan (Susannah), Elizabeth, and Eve.
