Biographies of the Six Iwo Jima Flag-Raisers

Six men participated in the second flag raising on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima which Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal captured in his Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph. They came from different parts of the United States, had different backgrounds and entered the military in different ways. Three survived to talk about Iwo jima and promote the Seventh War Bond effort; three were killed in action before the fighting on Iwo Jima was finished and before they were even identified in "the photo". All six received the Presidential Unit Citation with one star. A brief look at these men can be found below:

Sergeant Michael Strank, USMC
Corporal Harlon H. Block, USMC
Corporal Rene A. Gagnon, USMCR
Corporal Ira H. Hayes, USMCR
Pharmacist's Mate Second Class John H. Bradley, USN
Private First Class Franklin R. Sousley, USMCR

FYI - The only official, congressionally sanctioned hymn for any of the armed servces is "The Marines' Hymn"!
