PART III - S to Z
 - SOLDIERS OF THE CIVIL WAR - 1861-1865
This is not represented as a complete list of the soldiers who entered
the army from Durham and vicinity, but of those only whose names are at
hand, made up partly from the records of Col. Croasdale Post G.A.R. of
Riegelsville, tomestone inscriptions in the nearby cemeteries, the roster
of Company F. 31st Reg. New Jersey Volunteers found in the History of
Hunterdon County at pages 424, q.v. and the roster of the 104th Regiment
Pa. Vol. recruited at Doylestown, Bucks County by Col. W.W. H. Davis,
later General Davis, as published by him in 1866 in his "History of the
104th Regiment, a well as other local sources.
Durham Township borders on the Delaware River, making it possible for many
of its young men to enlist on the New Jersey side of the river. Many others
were recruited at Easton, where recruiting was carried on.
The compiler of this list, B.F.Fackenthal, Jr. b. in 1851, and therefore
10 years of age in 1861, remembers the war quite vividly, and later became
personally acquainted with many of the soldiers contained on this list.
In later years many of them were employed at the Durham Iron Works under
his management.
