Descendent of John Topel
William Craig married Jerusha Topel, she was born 2 mos before their arrival in the US in 1852. Her parents John and Mary Ziegler Topel, immigrated to the US with
Jerusha, Lewis (possibly served in the Civil War in the navy),
Huco (Hugo?-a OVI,Civil War Veteran) and Oscar. Unfortunately little is know about this family also. My grandmothers diary says they came from Berne, Switzerland. Lewis was a merchant marine and lived in Hawaii. Oscar may have been lost in the great San Fransico Earthquake of 1906, the last time he was heard from. Huco sold yard goods and visited occasionally.
Possibly Lewis Topel came over 10 yrs before the rest of the family. I show a Lewis Topell in NY in the 1840 census. I also show a John Topell in a NY census in 1850.
