What is F.A.B.?

The Feline Advisory Bureau is a charity dedicated to the health and welfare of cats. The Bureau was founded in 1958 when knowledge of the cat and its veterinary care was in its infancy. By gathering information and funding veterinary surgeons to specialise in the care of cats, FAB had a major influence on early improvements in veterinary treatment.
Since then the Bureau has continued to be a leader in feline matters, both in veterinary diagnosis and treatment, and in the welfare of cats in boarding and quaratine catteries. It has created the scientific backbone for many of the advances in the treatment of cats that we enjoy today. The need to fight against disease, and to try and understand the physical and mental make-up of our felines continues... the more we learn the more we find there is to discover.
Anyone can become a member, so join FAB and find out first hand about new discoveries and treatments and gain a unique insight into what makes cats tick

FAB members receive...

Scholars and Lecturer

FAB funds a specialist feline Scholarship at Bristol Veterinary School and a Residency at Edinburgh Veterinary School as well as other feline projects. Cats of all types from all over the country are referred to the veterinary surgeons holding these posts for specialised help. The information gained from the examination and treatment of these difficult cases continues to make a tremendous contribution to feline veterinary knowledge. Thanks to the generosity of the universities, FAB members pay less than non-members for this help. Veterinary surgeons can discuss difficult cases with Scholars. FAB also funds the first ever Lecturer in Feline Medicine, also at Bristol. Funding more scholarships at other veterinary schools is one of FAB's aims for the future. More cats can then benefit from FAB's expertise.

Boarding Cattery Information service

FAB's Boarding Cattery Information Service provides guidance on boarding cattery construction and management both through its manual, Boarding Cattery Construction and Management and through residential training courses in cattery management. Advice is freely given on all aspects of planning permission, licensing and any other queries relating to setting up and running a cattery. Working drawings, giving construction details for building an outdoor cattery, are available.
The Service inspects boarding catteries throughout the country and maintains a List of FAB Approved Catteries where the buildings meet FAB standards and where the proprietor has often been FAB trained. This List also provides useful guidelines on what to look for when choosing a cattery for the first time.
Advice can be obtained on choosing a quarantine cattery. A list of Residential Homes happy to accept pets along with their owners is also available.

Further titles are added or information updated when a new treatment or condition is recognised. A full list is available from FAB on request.

European Society of Feline Medicine

For many years there has been growing interest and enthusiasm for feline medicine within the veterinary profession. Many of the unique challenges of working with cats are now well understood, as is the need to treat them as a seperate species in their own right! In recognition of this, FAB aims to establish the European Society of Feline Medicine (ESFM) as an organisation to provide a focus for veterinary surgeons with a special interest in feline medicine throughout Europe. The ESFM will take an active role in the promotion of feline medicine by keeping its members informed of the latest developments in this field through the publication of a quarterly ESFM Newsletter and through the organisation of at least two day-conferences per year which will be held in association with other existing European veterinary conferences such as FECAVA and BSAVA. Membership of the ESFM will be open to all veterinarians at an anuual cost of £25. This will automatically include membership of FAB and members will therefore also recieve the FAB Journal. Current FAB veterinary members will recieve the ESFM Newslatter free in 1996 and will have the opportunity to rejoin the ESFM in March 1997.

ADVICE HELPLINE
