Pompeii is easily one of the most interesting places I have ever seen. Before my first visit, I was under the impression that it was merely a village buried by Mt. Vesuvius 2000 years ago, with a few buildings and some stone roads. I was stunned to discover how large the place is. It will easily take us 4 or 5 all day visits to cover it, but I am quite willing to make that sacrifice. The first thing we saw entering the city were the suburbs. The long steep climb foreshadows things to come. |

As you climb, you can see the Suburban Baths, which are pretty self-explanatory. These baths were mostly used by people coming into the town from outlying areas.

The Porta Marina Gate, originally the main gate coming from the harbor, has two covered archways. The pedestrian entrance has stairs, and to the right is a larger ramped opening used for carts and wagons.
