The Basilica was a meeting place for townspeople as well as the site of the town's law courts. In the back, you can see the judge's elevated seating area. The staircase leading up to it was made of something easily transportable (it is believed it was made of wood) in order to isolate the judge from those standing trial, as violent outbursts were common during sentencing.
