Why am I still nursing. I told every one that I would nurse my baby until he was 1. It was healthier and free, no one could deny that. But as my baby neared his first birthday I began to realize that we weren't stopping anytime soon. Everyone around me started in with the big question "When are you going
to wean that baby?" and I would smile and shrug my shoulders. I never knew any one who nursed their child past 6 weeks. Then I discovered other mothers online who were nursing their babies/toddlers and that it was not only ok, but
a privilege to nurse as long as you and your child wished.
I'm nursing my little boy because of the sheer pleasure it brings the both of us.
1) Bedtime is quiet and relaxed while he nurses to sleep. He sleeps in a toddler bed the first part of the night then wakes and comes into bed with me and nurses on and off until morning.
2) He wakes every morning with a smile and climbs into my lap for his breakfast appetizer. I've never had to worry if he is eating right; if he's not crazy about eating solid foods some days, he still gets perfect nutrition.
3) He is healthy, no pacing the floors because he feels miserable, no battles to get the medicine down.
Most of all because of the way pure joy and serenity washes over his face when he knows he can climb into my lap. The way his arm tucks under my breast when he cuddles in. The way milk comes out of his nose when is feeling squirmy and tries to nurse standing on his head. The way his eyes lock with mine and sends silent messages of love. And I look back with amazement thinking about what a gift I've been given to be able to sustain this incredible creature since his moment of conception.
