Nursing a Toddler

Why Do You Nurse A Toddler???

I never really thought about when I was going to wean Guillaume and it never occurred to me that I should stop at any particular point in time. I really enjoyed our moments of looking into each others eyes and touching. I found out that I was pregnant when Guillaume was 8 months old and my midwife saw no reason for me to stop, but his pediatrician had a fit! He said it would kill me or my unborn child and that I should wean him before it was too late. I decided to risk it and I was rewarded with a gift like no other.

My husband was deployed to Bosnia for six months of my pregnancy and my sister died right before the holidays of Leukemia. Breastfeeding my baby was sort of my way of holding on to life in a very tangible way. When Sebastien was born Guillaume wanted to nurse with him, they would hold on to each other and became very close. Guillaume nurses about three or four times a day now and he tries to be patient while Sebastien has his turn first! I was never engorged with this last child and my nipples never really were sore. I believe that nursing my two youngest boys (I also have a 5 year old boy) together has helped them and me to deal with the stress of everyday life. I don't believe that I will be stopping any time soon!
