Who We Are

The Heartland Herald

and sister publication The Athens City Times were established September 7, 1996 by Dennis Randall, an old-fashioned newspaper journalist who sees in the World Wide Web a means to restore the disappearing craft of small-town newspaper publishing. As producer and host of the Family Education Network's discussion groups Dennis had little time to maintain the newspapers alone, and so the twin publications had an easygoing, mostly unnoticed first year.

The Heartland Herald found new energy when Dennis was joined by an enthusiastic team of Heartland and Athens homesteaders, and the newspaper, now a journal, is emerging from its long rest with renewed purpose and many great plans!. The Heartland Herald is "A Parenting and Education Journal For Heartland Families & Friends." Our mission: to promote communication among Heartlanders about family interests and issues by seeking out and showcasing home pages with a theme of parenting, and by finding and providing links to the best interactive sites on the web for meeting other parents and for discussing anything and everything about the family.

Valarie

If there is light in the soul,
There will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.

-- Chinese Proverb

At an age when most children are worrying about their first day at kindergarten, Valarie was stealing food to keep her family alive while they walked out of Cambodia, dodging Khmer Rouge soldiers. Still very much alive, thank you, stay-at-home Indiana mom Val surfs around Heartland when she isn't adding to the fun in Dalnet chatroom #!married_not_dead" as "Wallarie." Fellow chatters allow her husband to chat too- but only if he signs on as "Wallhubby"!

Valarie promises to tell Heartland Herald readers about great family and parenting sites in Heartland. Surf on, Val, and bon voyage!
