How we changed into dog owners...

Me, Niksu, Make

Alert, agile... Summer fun at a dog park.

From dogless to owned by a Pharaoh

So the story goes, folks. For a long, long time we couldn't have even thought of having a dog in our house. Rodents and rabbits - yes. Dogs? No way.

Then, one night we got hungry and went for a hamburger. There, on the parking lot in a car was this gorgeous dog looking at us. I picked my memories: this dog is a Pharaoh Hound.

At home, out of curiosity for this rare breed, I started looking for information on it. What I found, raised our interest. Intelligent, independent dog who uses his own mind. A dog who's prime interest in life isn't pleasing the owner. Friendly, a bit distant with strangers... This and that gorgeous looks.

As time went by, we got more and more interested in getting one, but were still hesitant. A dog is a huge responsibility for a long time, totally different from all our other pets. Training, daily walks, what to do when you have to go somewhere...

Then, our rabbit Jaakko died unexpectedly. We didn't feel like getting another rabbit, the sorrow was too great. Well, we started thinking that perhaps now was the time for the dog. It didn't take long after the initial decision of us being ready for a dog to find an ad on Pharaohs. I called in, and the breeder told me she had three males (just what we wanted), 5 months old (again, we didn't want a small puppy). I got a long lecture on Pharaoh Hounds, a sort of anti sales speach was asked to call back after thinking this over again. We thought a couple of days, called again and agreed to go and see the puppies. To put a long story short - we came home with Niksu.

I have to say, that in after thought our timing was perfect. There were no Pharaoh puppies born in Finland for over two years after our Niksu's litter.

It has been a great time and our choise of breed has been right - for us. No dog breed is suitable for everyone, but the Pharaoh Hound certainly needs an owner who really knows where she has put her head into, so to speak. Lots of humor is a requirement for a Pharaoh owner.

Summerfun!

Being independent a Pharaoh will not live to please you and can turn totally deaf, blind and also stupid when he wants to. This means that anything you say will be ignored if the Pharaoh so pleases. This is the case even with highly trained, obedience competing Pharaohs. This can be both amusing and annoying...

As the Pharaoh Hound is intelligent, he will try and also succeed in out smarting the poor owner. Our Niksu is very good in interpreting our actions, he has also learned (on his own) quite a lot of words (``and suddenly, we couldn't talk about hamburgers anymore without having Niksu jump up and demand that we go get some").

Hunt!

The high hunting drive of the Pharaoh is something to take into consideration when taking a Pharaoh for a walk. Unleashed Pharaoh Hound in unfenced area can be a very bad combination. If there appears something that the dog finds and hunts, he will take off leaving the owner to yell in vain and listening to ``kurriera" (the Pharaoh's high pitch hunting bark) from the distance. If there is traffic around, the poor dog may get run over.

Well, that's all for now
