Bluebeard buried his treasure at the spot shown on the map. He knew that a copy might be made,so he dug a shaft 30 feet deep and buried 3 fourths of his treasure there. He covered that and filled in the shaft at the depth of 10 feet, where he buried a quarter of the treasure-which he was prepared to sacrifice to protect the rest. He reckoned that no one who had found substantial treasure at 10 feet would dig a further 20 feet and that once word got out that his treasure had been taken no one else would look for it.
