Stephen Chilton
Stephen Chilton was born about 1720/5 in Lancaster Co., VA the son
of William Chilton (d.1755) and his wife, Frances (Maizey) Chilton. He
was married to Judith HOBSON about 1748. Judith Hobson (b.1725) was the
daughter of William and Judith (Fleet) Hobson, of Northumberland Co.,
VA. Stephen and Judith (Hobson) Chilton are both mentioned in the will
of Judith (Fleet) Hobson, which was proven in 1766 in Northumberland
Co., VA.
Stephen Chilton's will (written 13 Oct 1766; proven 11 Nov 1766) was recorded in Northumberland Co., VA. He mentions his son, Fleet, by name and refers to his other children.
Stephen Chilton is mentioned briefly in John Frederick Dorman's excellent series of articles on the Chilton family of Virginia which appeared in THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST. Dorman mentions Stephen Chilton in volume 14, page 126 of that publication, but only goes so far as to mention that he served as a servant to James Robb in 1744 in Lancaster County and that "No further record of him has been found." Perhaps the fact that Stephen Chilton established himself in neighboring Northumberland County and died at a relatively young age in relative obscurity contributed to the lack of details concerning his life in the article.
Stephen and Judith (Hobson) Chilton had the following children, all recorded in the St. Stephen's Parish Register, Northumberland Co., VA:
1. Millicent (b. 26 Mar 1749)
2. Fleet Chilton (b. 5 Mar 1751)
3. Molly CHILTON (3 Jun 1753-1792) married, in 1771, Thomas Carter (1750-1810). They settled in South Carolina and Thomas served in the Revolutionary War. He received land for his service in Franklin Co., GA. The area where he settled later fell within Hall Co., GA.
It is said that Thomas Carter (1750-1810) was a son of Thomas Carter, a native of Lancaster Co., VA who also settled in SC, in the Edgefield District. The elder Thomas Carter was said to be a son of Daniel Carter (c1700-1759) and his wife Elizabeth; a grandson of Thomas Carter (1672-1733) and his wife, Arabella; and a great-grandson of Thomas Carter (c1634-1700) and his wife Katherine (Dale) Carter (c1652-1703). This line of descent has not been verified.
4. John Chilton (b. 10 Oct 1755)
5. William Chilton (b. 12 Mar 1758)
