BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL PAGE

My very first favorite baseball team was the Boston Red Sox. That is because I read an article about the great Ted Williams and started following him and his team. I was never a fan of the New York Yankees but one could not help root for Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle to break the home run record. The Cincinnati Reds were the closest team to where we lived for many years and probably got more publicity in the area with the St. Louis Cardinals also fairly popular. But during the early 70's, I lived in the Atlanta area and became a fan of the Atlanta Braves. I also developed interest in the Chicago Cubs because my father in law was a big fan of the Cubs and everyone loved Skip Carey's dad, Harry! When we lived in Maryland, I became a fan of the Baltimore Orioles and remained so until all the players I had followed retired or left the team.

My interest in the Braves has sagged a bit. Part of is was due to their missing the playoffs and part of it is the lack of coverage in the Nashville TV market. But I continue to be a big Braves fan and will follow them as long as they are in contention. I'll be checking on the Pacific Coast League's Nashville Sounds which I can see in person with a short drive.

The Braves blew hot and cold this season. After making a good run for the wild card, they lost the last six games after they were eliminated from playoff contention.

2009 Regular Season:
Won 86, lost 76 for a .531 percentage, in 3rd place, 7 games behind the Phillies and 1 game behind the Marlins. Next year, it is back to the playoffs.

2008 Regular Season: Won 72 and lost 90 for a .444 percentage,
20.0 games out of first behind Philadelphia.

Salute To 14 Playoff Seasons In A Row

The Braves won 14 divisional championships in a row from 1991 through 2005 with a year 69 67 .507 6.5 off that was shortened by a strike. This was a record for all professional sports franchises in America. To salute this streak, I looked at the Major League Baseball site and make a table listing the Braves leaders in several categories posted below.

Preparing this table was a trip down memory lane for me. It has been quite a run and provided a lot of satisfaction and excitment. It will be interesting to see if the Braves or some other team can establish another streak.
