COLLEGE BASKETBALL
The 2008/2009 Season.

On this page, I track my 10 favorite college basketball teams. Usually every team's season ends in a loss except the tournament winner's. Each year I list how and when the seasons end in order. The team that winds up on top has the best season. For the past several years, the Lady Vols played longer into the season than any other of my teams. Results from 2008 are shown at the bottome of the page. Once again this year, the first two teams out were my Tennessee Men and Women. I am hoping that one of these years they can get their act together and move up in my standings.

For the first time since I have been using this format, the Lady Vols will not be at the top. The Volunteer men dropped to the 5th spot. Congratulations to the vanderbilt Women for finishing on top. It remains to be seen how far they can go. The Vandy women went out just like the Lady Raiders after having big leads and letting the other teams fight their way back and win.

All in all, it was a down season for my ten teams. But it sets up a lot of questions for next year. Will the Lady Vols and Men Vols get back to the top or will it be the Lady Raiders or Lady Dores or someone else?

A Few Extra Notes

A Tale of Two Players

For four years at South Gwinnett High School, I followed two players, Louis Williams and Mike Mercer. Both players were originally recruited to play for the University of Georgia but Williams changed his mind and decided to turn pro out of high school. He was drafted toward the very end of the draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. Most people felt he was making a big mistake by not getting the college experience and having the fun of leading Georgia to big things.

How is it turning out? The story is definitely still being written but here is the latest. Louis Williams has gotten more and more playing time and was a key figure in the 76er's run to the playoffs last year. This year he has become a regular backup guard.

Mike Mercer had a really great freshman year and was looking like a rising SEC star his sophomore year when he sustained and injury. But something went wrong and he was kicked off the team. He has transfered to South Florida. Mike became elligible to play for the Bulls in late December, 2008. Mike played in a couple of games averaging 11 points before he suffered a torn right Anterior Cruciate Ligament. His surgery was scheduled for Jan. 8 and he will miss the remainder of the season. Tough luck for Mike.

Western Carolina

Western Carolina Women's basketball. Kellie Harper who was formerly Kellie Jollie, one of my favorite UT players. I notice she is following in Pat Summitts footsteps by playing a tough schedule.

South Walton High School

Another player that I am following is Jake Wright who is the son of a friend of mine, Chuck Wright. Jake goes to South Walton and may be covered at times by these three newspapers; Daily News, Log or Sun. Here is another site where one can track high school players, Max Preps.com.
