George Edgar ENGEL Jr., 64, a retired postal employee, died Saturday at an Arlington hospital. Memorial service: 6:30 tonight at Salvation Army Corps, 712 W. Abram St. in Arlington. George Edgar Engel Jr., born March 31, 1932, joined his beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Glory Land on Aug. 17, 1996. Ed was born in Spokane, Wash., to Salvation Army officers Colonel George E. Engel Sr. and Ester Engel. At 17 years of age, Ed joined and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. Upon completion of his training with the Marines, he joined the Air Force, where he served in combat during the Korean War, then retired after 20 years of service. Upon his retirement from the armed forces, Ed became employed by the U.S. Postal Service and after 17 years of employment, retired to Salem, Ore., finally settling in Arlington. On May 8, 1953, Ed married Bettie L. Simpson of Phoenix. After 10 years of marriage, they became the proud parents of George "Eddie" Edward and Julie Alisa Engel, their two children. Ed gave his life to Christ as a young man, and at the age of 41 rededicated his life to Christ. During that part of his life, God rekindled his love for music and he became a tuba player for the Salvation Army band. Ed later became a bandmaster in the Salvation Army. He also enjoyed playing the E Flat tuba for the Phoenix Jazz Band and the Murray Symphony Orchestra. In all, Ed served the Lord through the Salvation Army for more than 50 years. Ed was preceded into Glory by his wife of 43 years, Bettie L. Engel, and his brother, Major Robert Engel of Bellingham, Wash. Survivors: Father, Colonel George E. Engel Sr. and his wife, Florence Engel, of Bellingham; sister, Mary Ross of Sacramento, Calif.; son, George Edward Engel of Pensacola, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Richard Roman of Arlington; and grandchildren, Megan Renee Engel and Richardo, Aaron, Rebekah and Nathan Roman.

Bettie Lou ENGEL, 64, a homemaker, died Tuesday in Arlington. Funeral: 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Salvation Army, 712 W. Abram, in Arlington. Bettie Lou Engel was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Tucson, Ariz. She was a resident of Arlington and was a homemaker. She was very active in the Salvation Army, of which she was a member for 50 years. Survivors: Husband, George Engel of Arlington; son, Edward Engel of Pensacola, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Richard Roman of Arlington; brother, Virgil Simpson of San Diego; three sisters, Doris H. Page of West Point, Utah, Collie Knutson of Murray, Utah, and Shirley Van Duzee of Tucson; and six grandchildren, Ricky Roman, Aaron Roman, Nathan Roman and Carlos Chacon, all of Arlington, Megan Renee Engel of Guntersville, Ala., and Rebekah Roman of Arlington.
