James "Jimmy" Webb, 55, a 201/2-year market manager for Safeway and a nine year assistant foreman in Maintenance for the Texas Highway Department, died Saturday at an Erath County hospital. Mel L. WHEELER, 81, a television pioneer and longtime broadcast executive, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at home in Denton. Funeral: services pending at Harper-Morris Funeral Home in Pensacola, Fla. Visitation: 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at DeBerry Funeral Home in Denton. Mel L. Wheeler was born March 6, 1916, in Marietta, Ga. He served in the Army during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star while serving as an infantry first sergeant in the Philippines. He married Vinny Ryan in 1944. He entered the business of television and radio broadcasting after the war. He was the first general manager of Wear-TV in Pensacola, Fla., during the 1950s and early '60s. He was president of Bass Brothers Broadcasting of Fort Worth from 1967 till 1975. Bass Brothers owned television and radio stations in Texas, California and Virginia. In 1976, he formed Mel Wheeler, Inc., which owns radio stations in Roanoke, Va., and television stations WSIL in Harrisburg, Ill., and KRCG in Jefferson City, Mo. He was active in the company until his death. Survivors: Wife, Vinny R.
