Crate Training for your Dog

Crate Training is not too difficult, but I have a few helpful hints.

First of all and most important is that you should never, ever, under any circumstances, put your dog in the crate as a punishment. You should regard it as your dog's room and it should be a positive experience.

Here is how to do that:

Store her toys in there with the door wide open. Whenever you give her a treat, toss it into the back of the crate so she gets used to going in and out of there. Feed her in there and after she has gotten used to going in and out of there, start closing the door of the crate while she is eating.

Don't take her out until she has settled down because you don't want to encourage the behavior that "If I scream, they will come and get me" Keep the crate in a very populated area so she won't feel excluded. Gradually extend the amount of time she spends in the crate and you will find that she goes in there readily.

My dogs just BOOK for the crate when I tell them to go into their house for a treat! Give it a whirl. The first couple of times, as soon as she is done with the "cookie, open the door and get her out before she has time to yell. That will help, too! Just remember to gradually extend the time she is enclosed in there.

Many thanks to Ellen Morris for sharing her wisdom!
