(1) Open the animal's mouth and look for the object that's causing the choking. If you can see or feel anything, remove it.
Be careful: After you remove the object, the animal may be disoriented--and even a normally passive animal may bite.
(2) If you can't see the object, immediately lay your dog on his side on the floor. Put a rolled-up towel or other object under his hips so that his head is lower than his hips.
(3) Place both of your hands on the animals diaphragm--just beneath his rib cage--and rapidly depress the diaphragm four to five times in a thrusting motion.
For smaller dogs and cats: Pick the animal up upside down, with its back against your chest. Wrap your arms around the animal's midsection, and gently sway the animal back and forth for about 30 seconds.
