Alfred Haddock & Martha Dickinson

Alfred HADDOCK was chr Jul 21st 1861 in Barnton Cheshire,
the son of Thomas HADDOCK & Ann WORRALL
who had married Dec 29 1844
at St Mary & All Saints Great Budworth Cheshire.

Martha DICKINSON was born Aug 9 1862 at Canal Bank in Runcorn Cheshire
which is about 30 miles from Atherton Lancashire.
She was the daughter of Jonathan DICKINSON & Mary BILSBURY
who were married Apr 5 1858 at Manchester Cathedral.
At the time of Martha's birth, Jonathan was a 'boatman'.

While she was unmarried,
Martha gave birth to little Jonathan DICKINSON in Feb 1880
but sadly the little fellow died at age 6 months
and was buried Aug 16 1880 near his grandfather, Jonathan.

Whether either Alfred HADDOCK
was the father of little Jonathan is unknown.

Alfred had actually only turned 19 yrs old in the summer of that year
~ I am unsure why he stated he was a full year older.

Alfred & Martha are each listed as UNMARRIED in the 1881 Census
and it could simply be because they are not in the same house at the time
~ an assumption on the part of the Census taker?!

Alfred & Martha had 3 daughters
:

1) Eve (Evie) born Sep 13 1882 in Astley
married Aug 30 1902 to John Robert BARLOW
at Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Bedford Leigh.
(Robert was born abt 1881,
the son of John BARLOW & Ann WORTHINGTON)

The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Bedford
opened in 1816
and was part of Selina, the Countess of Huntingdon's
New Connexion chapels.

The Countess of Huntingdon helped fund gospel efforts
by
George Whitefield as well as John Wesley.

2) *Mary (Polly) born May 30 1886

Sisters Eve & Mary were christened together when they were both older,
on Mar 26 1891 at St Stephens, Astley.

3) Ruth born abt 1888 in Atherton
married Nov 6 1909 to Peter BROWN at St Stephens, Astley.
Witnesses were:
Ruth's 1st cousin Margaret BROWNBILL &
her future husband, Harry SHAW who she married Dec 9 1911.

*Their middle child, my GR grandmother, Mary HADDOCK (known as Polly)
was born May 30 1886
at the Union Workhouse in Atherton
which was located at Atherleigh,
about 1/2 way between Atherton and Leigh.

On her birth certificate, a line is written through where the father's name would be !

* * *

She married Noah THOMASON on Apr 14 1906 at St John's Parish in Atherton.
(Noah was born Dec 1882 in Atherton,
the son of John THOMASON & Esther TICHBORNE)
On her marriage certificate,
father is listed as Alfred HADDOCK, boatman, deceased.

Knowing that Alfred & Martha's youngest daughter Ruth was born in 1888,
it would seem that Alfred died between 1887 to 1901
since I cannot locate him on the Indexed 1901 Census online.

On marriage registry for Ruth in Nov 1909,
Alfred is listed as 'collier' and it doesn't state 'deceased'
as it did on Mary & Noah's marriage certificate.

The mystery of what happened to him is one that I would love to solve!!

Mary (Polly) Haddock Thomason ~ age approx. 63 yrs (circa 1949)

Martha Dickinson (HADDOCK) married 2nd to Thomas COLLIER
between Jul - Sep 1890, registered in Barton upon Irwell Lancashire.
For some strange reason,
she is listed as Martha DICKINSON on their marriage certificate
even though she had been married already ?

Martha & her 2nd husband had 7 children, all born Astley.
