Birding Center
These are Sandhill Cranes (Probably in the Gulf of Mexico in Texas)
They are the birds that got Leta and I started in bird
watching.
I think its interesting that the sandhill cranes (Latin name: muuderhen!) are indigenous to both Texas and Michigan. I have enjoyed these particular birds for many years now. Although my first encounter with them, I was slightly off on my identification of them. (I only missed them by 1 PLANET.....Mars is the next one out from the sun, after all!)
There is a local sanctuary for them just outside of Jackson, Michigan. The Phyllis Haehnle Sancuary, and you can hear the eerie call the cranes make, it often gives me shivers.

Bastrop and Buetcher State Parks, Texas
From: "heartoftxlady" <

During Tom's recent trip to Texas, we had scheduled some birding
activities...but didn't quite get to do what we had planned.
Amazing how time flies!!
We did however take one day during his trip to do some birding. We
headed out to Bastrop State Park and Buescher State Park
(approximately an hour and half southeast of Austin) on Friday, the
8th. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! Low 80's maybe, sunshine
and beautiful blue skies.
It was a bit disconcerting at first, as we didn't see alot of
birds. No...let me take that back....at first we didn't see ANY
birds! However...we hung in there and we were rewarded with bird
activity in the afternoon, not to mention, we had a wonderful day,
and got lots of good exercise and fresh air.
We saw several species of hawks (okay okay okay...we aren't great at
identifying exact species yet...but we are getting there...lol),
black vultures, woodpeckers (again, several kinds), titmice,
carolina chickadees, mallard ducks, the AFLAC duck (lol), and of
course who could forget the COMMON LOON! ;)
It was a great trip...and lots of fun...and as always...we are
novice birders and are getting the hang of it all and learning.
Patience...a big birding tool!
Thank you Tom for a wonderful trip! :) I'm looking forward to our
next birding outing! :)
