Husband’s Notes...
--------------------------------------------------
Notes:
We are not sure where our Cooke's originated from or where they first lived in America.  There were many families from Bertie County, North Carolina, who went to Trigg County, Kentucky and perhaps our Cooke's were among them. There was a William Cooke, Sr. born 1690 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and died in Bertie County, N. C.  It's possible that this William is of our family. It is believed that a William Cooke was the father of our John Cooke and that some other children were a
Joseph Payne and a James.  The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Carla D. Wolcoff dated 9 Nov 1996.

"First of all, your John and my Joseph are brothers.  There was also a brother named James.  I haven't found sisters as yet.  I mentioned to you before that I think that William Cooke was their father.  I have his pension papers in 1832 where he filed in Graves Co., Ky. and states he was born in Pittsylvania, Va. in 1763.  Pittsylvania wasn't a county until 1767.  Pittsylvania came out of part of Halifax or Lunenberg.  I found on the Va. service some Cooke's that had Cookes in Pittsylvania who went to Bertie Co., NC.  They haven't replied again yet but said they would.  Reubin Cooke came from Bertie with his family and settled in Caldwell Co., Ky. and later in Graves Co. Ky.  His descendants remained there and some intermarried with my Morse line there.  I believe Reuben might be a cousin of William.  Another reason I think we are in the right area is my Joseph's middle name was Payne.  He named his son Lorenzo Payne Cooke and later there was a Lorenzo Payne McDaniel.  So I think that John and Joseph's mother was a Payne.  There was a John Payne in Pittsylvania Co. at the same time as William Cooke."

In another letter received from John K. Elliott (son of Eliza Jane Cook and John Elliott) dated 22 June 1968 he gives the following information: "My mother had a Bible that she said was over a hundred years old when she got it.  It contained a record of the Cooke family that covered many years. When Mother died, an older brother took the Bible, with other books of Father's.  When my brother died, the books were stored in a neighbor's basement which got flooded, and ruined all the books.  If we had that Bible, we would be ok.  I could have got it, but I was busy and neglected it until it was to late. John Cooke was not a farmer--he was a wagon maker.  He built and equipped a shop of his own a short distance west of Flora, Ill.  He built the prairie schooner that my father used to bring his family to Colorado. My mother said that they lived in Trigg County while in Kentucky.  She told about her romps and plays, as a little girl, on the banks of the Cumberland River."
