"Heaven's Very Special Child"
A meeting was held quite far from earth,
It's time again for another birth.
Said the angels to the Lord above,
this special child will need much love.
Her progress may seem very slow,
accomplishments she may not show.
And she'll require extra care from the folks she'll meet down there.
She may not run or laugh or play,
her thoughts may seem quite far away.
In many ways she won't adapt,
and she'll be known as handicapped.
So let's be careful where she's sent.
We want her life to be content.
Please Lord find the parents who will do a special job for you.
They will not realize right away,
the leading part they're asked to play.
But with this child sent from above,
comes stronger faith and greater love.
And soon they'll know the priviledge given,
in caring for this gift from heaven.
Their precious charge so meek and mild
is Heaven's Very Special Child.

"My Special Angel"
Stacy Dawn is the oldest of my 3 children. I had waited all of my life to be a Mom and I couldn't wait til that blessed day when she was born.
She was 6 weeks premature and only wieghed in at 4.2 pounds. She struggled very hard to survive, while all the time the doctors were telling me that she wouldn't.
I should have know that any daughter of mine would have the guts and the stamina to fight all odds and come through it with a little smile on her face. That is exactly what she did, much to everyone's amazement!
Little did we know that this was just the first barrier that we would have to cross. The next statement was that she wouldn't live to see 10 years of age, and although it's been a very rough journey for all of us...Stacy Dawn will be 25 years old this coming August '98!
Stacy can't talk, so she uses her eyes to communicate with me; I'm not sure of how well she can see, so she uses her hearing to commpensate; she can't walk or sit alone, so I always know where she is and what she's doing (unlike our other kids) and she almost always has a smile on her face for her Mom. She loves music and laughter and lots of lovin'.
Having a child like Stacy has made my life a little different than some parents have it. We couldn't always do the things with our other children that we would have liked to, after Stacy got older and heavier. I do believe that having her for a sister has made our other children more compassionate, caring, and responsible adults though. I know that she has really enriched my life and I feel that I was truly blessed to have the honor of being chosen as her Mother.
WELL, IT'S BEEN QUIET A FEW YEARS SINCE I'VE UPDATED THIS SITE, BUT I GUESS IT'S TIME THAT I DID.
Stacy Dawn passed from this earth in my arms on the morning of February 18, 2002. She was 28 years of age. It was finally time to let her go. She fought a really hard battle her whole life, just to stay alive for me and her family.
One of my only selfish wishes her whole life was just that she would be able to say "Mama", just once, before she died. The night before she died, my wish came true. My husband Dan and my daughter Shauna Kay and I were sitting in Stacy's hospital room when out of nowhere out of her limp almost lifeless body we all heard her say "Mama" just as clear as day. People used to always think they heard her say it when she would be whining or just making noises, but I would assure them that she didn't and believe me I would know it when she did......well, she finally did. Of course we all held her and cried, but my heart was finally full.
We all knew it was time to let her go, she was so tired and weary. We also know that she is always with us in our hearts and mind, only now she's finally complete! Someday we'll all be back together and we'll finally have so much to talk about!
I know now that what they meant about there being no greater loss, than that of a child, especially when it's your own. I do finally feel at peace about it though, for I know that there is no more pain or worries for her. She was and still is...

THE SPECIAL MOTHER
Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures, and a couple by habit. This year nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting His instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger. "Armstrong, Beth; son, Patron Saint Matthew. Forest, Janet; daughter, Patron Saint Cecelia. Myers, Carrie; twins,Patron Saint . . . give her Gerard. He's used to profanity.
He passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a handicapped child." The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."
"Excactly," smiles God. "Could I give a handicapped child a mother who does not know laughter? This would be cruel. "But does she have patience?" asks the angel. "I don't want her to have too much patience, or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it. I watched her today. She has that sense of self and independence that are so rare and necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has it's own world. She has to make it live in her world and that's not going to be easy." "But Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles, "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't seperate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect.
She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take forgranted a spoken word. She will never consider a step ordinary. When her child says "Mama" for the first time, she will be witness to a miracle and know it. When she describes a tree or a sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see; ignorance, cruelty, prejudice and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side. "And what about her Patron Saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air. God smiles, "A mirror will suffice."
