MEYERS AND SENEGAL PARROTS

Senegals or Meyers parrots are also a very good choice if you want a small, quiet parrot. They rarely make much noise at all and their natural call is more like a whistle than a squawk. It could be considered a little high-pitched, and some people prefer loud to high-pitched, but I find their noise to be quite acceptable, and very infrequent. Most handfed senegals or meyers are usually adorable small parrots, but their personalities can vary greatly among individuals. Some are very sedate and docile like the pionus, while some can be quite playful and animated, so you will want to assess the bird's personality in accordance with what you prefer. Their personality is quite readily noticed from a very young age.

Although I have read and heard of senegals that talked fairly well, although not particularly clear, I have yet to hear a senegal or meyers speak. Although we breed senegals and meyers and have sold several sweet handfed babies, we have not kept any pets ourselves, so it makes it difficult for us to assess their talking ability. It's difficult for us to keep the smaller parrots as pets since we have so many larger pet birds, and would hate for one to be injured. I should add that these smaller birds seem to show no fear of the larger birds, and will attempt to run them off (and it will often work). Even though they think they're real tough, they really need to be protected and kept separate from the larger parrots.

While these birds could do no real damage, they can and will bite to show their displeasure or disapproval. It seems that because of their small size, they want to try to bluff their way into being the boss. This should be no real problem if you use consistent training methods, and let them know you're the boss; although some people do prefer to let these cute little parrots "think" their the boss, as they can't do much harm. They will rarely bite hard, although their little beaks are just as capable of breaking the skin as the larger parrots. As with most biting from tame parrots, they are simply try to show you their likes and dislikes, and a caring and observant owner can easily learn to tell what their parrot is trying to tell them.

These little parrots are an excellent choice if you want a small, quiet parrot, that can be entertaining and comical as well.
