Pionus parrots are the perfect choice for someone who wants a quieter parrot, and this characteristic, as well as their compact size make them are very suited for apartment living. Although they do make some noise when excited, or when they're exhibiting breeding behavior, their voices are fairly quiet and most tolerable to most people. In short, if someone thinks the Pionus is too noisy or rambunctious, perhaps they should consider a goldfish (or maybe a pet rock.)
Handfed pionus are also very gentle and affectionate, and they rarely bite or nip unless teased. This makes them a good choice for someone with small children, or someone fearful of getting bit. Remember though, that all parrots can bite, and the pionus is no exception, but I feel a tame pionus is one of the least likely to seriously bite someone unless they are provoked or frightened. Their quiet, gentle nature would also make them an excellent choice for an elderly or disabled person looking for a feathered companion. Most tame pionus parrots enjoy being petted, and will sit for long periods to soak up the affection, but don't seem to mind sitting quietly once you tired of petting. I have yet to see a tame, handfed pionus that has become overly spoiled and obnoxious like many other species, and I have also never seen any become neurotic feather-pluckers or screamers. I have not had as much experience with pionus as some of the other species, so I cannot say for sure that there are not ill-mannered Pionus out there somewhere. I can only tell you that mine (who are tame but not handfed), as well as those of friends that I've been around, do not exhibit such behavior.
Although Pionus are not known to be good talkers, and I have yet to hear a word from mine (or anyone else's for that matter), I do know people who say their pionus can speak a few words. My own pionus's do not seem to be as playful and animated as most other species, and seem most content to sit quietly. While I personally prefer a more entertaining and playful bird, their quiet and sedate nature is just perfect for many people. I'm sure there are pionus around that are more playful than mine, but I don't believe most pionus are very gregarious or show-offish. However, they are very sweet, quiet and docile, and make absolutely wonderful pet parrots if you're looking for companionship rather then entertainment.
