HOW TO POTTY-TRAIN YOUR HAMSTER

It sounds impossible, but my hamster is potty-trained. If you potty-train your hamster, then you will be able to brag that your hamster is potty-trained, like I do. It is very simple to potty-train hamsters, since they are creatures of habit. They usually pick one corner of their cage in which they urinate. After you find the corner (this won't be too difficult), simply follow these steps:

Find a glass or plastic jar that is big enough for your hamster to turn around in. Take the lid off.

Turn the jar on its side and place it in the "bathroom corner."

This step is optional, but you may want to place some dry droppings in the jar to encourage your hamster.

I introduced Chandler to his "pee jar" by placing him in front of it. He sniffed it and went inside. It is good to do this so your hamster knows that the jar exists.

The next day, look inside the jar. You will be pleasantly surprised to find your hamster's (liquid) wastes inside! (IMPORTANT: Your hamster may only choose to urinate in the jar, while placing droppings anywhere. But droppings dry quickly, so they are relatively odorless.)

Another advantage of potty-training your hamster is that the smell will be almost eliminated if you clean out the jar everyday. Also, you will not have to put clean shavings in the bathroom corner as frequently, since their liquid wastes will only be touching the inside of the jar.
