bullet Milton Clapham(1) was born on 23 Aug 1845 in Westerville, OH. He died on 13 Jun 1931 in Mutual, OK. He was buried in Persimmon Cemetery, Mutual, OK. During this period, General Grant had requested the service of enormous volunteer reserves for his campaign into Virginia. The Governor of Ohio promised President Lincoln many men for a short period of time. Milton joined Company C, 133rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment for a period of 100 days. He marched to Washington and then south to Aquia Creek which was a staging area near the Rappahannock River north of Fredricksburg. Fredricksburg was one of the last Confederate strongholds before Richmond and Petersburg. Little is known of his duty, but history tells that just staying alive under the conditions at Aquia Creek was a major accomplishment.
After his release from active service, he went to Iowa to visit his mother's family, the Coes. While visiting, he met AMELIA HOUGH, and they were married on November 27, 1867.
After Milton and Amelia were married, they resided near Boone, Iowa. In the fall of 1869, Frank Hough (Amelia's brother) traveled to Kansas to stake claims. The government had opened the Osage Indian lands to settlement. His claim was near Derby, Kansas. He built a dugout and stayed the winter. In June of 1870, Milton and Amelia with their firstborn, and Amelia's parents (JAMES THOMAS HOUGH and FRANCIS JANE RANDOLPH) arrived with all of their stock and belongings. They settled on adjoining claims.
Milton built a one-room log house from trees cut near the creek. The only heat was the cook stove. Milton and Amelia had eight children--Francis Malvina, Arthur Thomas, William A., Estella, Bertran, Anna Daisy, Edna F., and Waldo R. Parents: George Clapham and Malvina Coe.
