One day when Pooh was walking towards this bridge, he was
trying to make up a piece of poetry about fircones, because they were lying
about on each side of him, and he felt singy.
A House at Pooh Corner, A. A. Milne
Children love to sing, chant, and make rhymes.
Today, however, many do not come to school with phonemic awareness. Using
oral language is important in literacy development for emergent readers as well
as those children learning English as a second language. Poems, songs,
rhymes and chants have a linguistic pattern that enables learners to acquire
strong linguistic structures. As Pooh found poetry from the things around
him, children can be motivated to play with the language in their world.
Through these oral language patterns, teachers can develop a sense of joy in
language use.
