7 JOHN GOODE FARMER I AND
HIS DESCENDANTS
7 John Goode Farmer I, born at Farmdale, Franklin Co., Ky, July 11,
1808, d. Feb 1, 871. He married Katherine Spencer Hawkins September 17,
1835. She was born July 1, 1814 in Franklin Co., Ky., d. Nov 1, 1851. They
moved to Christiansburg, Shelby Co., Ky., where their seven children were
born. He operated a farm and for many years a general store in Christiansburg.
He was the Post Master for many years. He was a great Sabbatarian, very
austere and a prominent member of the Baptist Church.
His first wife, Katherine, was the daughter of WIlliam B Hawkins and
Mary Crockett Hawkins. William B Hawkins, b. Feb 26, 1781, d. Mar 29, 1843.
Mary Crockett Hawkins, b. Feb 9, 1781, d. March 31,1856. They were married
Jan 15, 1802. She was the daughter of Col. Anthony Crockett of Virginia
and Kentucky, a Revolutionary Army Officer, and Mary Robertson Crockett
of Prince Edward Co., Va., or Botecourt Co., Va.
The second wife of 7 John Goode Farmer I was Mrs. Nannie Bondurant,
m. 1863, b. March 25, 1831, d. Mar 4, 1915. She was the widow of William
S Bondurant and the daughter of Thomas Basket of Shelby Co., Ky. They were
the parents of three children: Frances, Edward Thomas and a son born in
1864 who lived only five days. 7 John Goode Farmer I and his first wife
were buried at Christiansburg, Ky.; his second wife at Louisville, Ky.
His will, now in the writer's possession, is dated Jan 27, 1871, proved
Feb 10, 1875 and ordered recorded, Attest: Jno F Davis, Clerk Shelby County
Court.

Ellery , MD of La Grange, Mo., in 1878. He practiced medicine in La Grange
for fifty-four years, d. 1934. He was a descendant of William Ellery who

praacticed medicine in La Grange and Palmyra, Mo., d. 1940. Their three

He was a chaplain in the Confederate Army. He was President of La Grange
College, La Grange, Mo., 1866 - 1896, now Hannibal - La Grange College.
He died May 12, 1912. Through the influence of Sue G Cook all her living
brothers and sisters moved to La Grange, Mo.

Richmond, Va., m. Julia West of Richmond, Va., Dec 20, 1888. She was born
Aug 28, 1865, d. Nov 6, 1937. They are buried in Richmond, Va. He was admitted
to the Bar in 11881 and was for three years a law partner of Champ Clark,
Bowling Green, Mo., who was Speaker U S House of Representatives in President
Wilson's Adm. He was ordained a Baptist minister in 1887. He held pastorates
and engaged in denominational work in Missouri, South Dakota and Virginia.
He served as a Red Cross Director in W W I at Camp Funston, Kan., and Camp
Pike, Ark.

the Norfolk Navy Hospital one year; then as Marine doctor on San Domingo
until 1921 when he resigned from the regular Navy Med Corps and resumed
practice at Boonville, Mo. He held a commission in the Army Med Res. Corps
between WW I and WW II. He was called to active duty as a Colonel in the
Army Med Corps in WW II. He commanded through the war the Ninth Evacuation
Hospital in Europe which was the Roosevelt Hospital Unit of NY City. It
was attached to General Patton's army. It made a distinguished record.

Va. He was also engaged in important denominational work, On his retirement
June 30, 1948, Dr. Douglass S Freeman, Editor of the Richmond News Leader,
published an editorial entitled "An Invincible Pastor." It recounted
his outstanding success in the ministry he had adorned for fifty-four years.
The last paragraph of the editorial reads as follows: "Among all the
faithful clergy of this Commonwealth during the two most difficult decades
that American Christianity has known since the Revolution, none has performed
a larger service in a larger spirit. Well done, nobly done, incomparably

affairs and in politics; was an excellent public speaker. He married Winfree
Ellery Nov 28, 1878. She was born Nov 9, 1856, d. Jan 26, 1953. She was
the daughter of Dr. William Epes Ellery, MD of La Grange, Mo. Winfree was
the name of her maternal grandmother's Virginia family. The Ellery family
came from Massachusetts. (See allied families) All of the children were
born in La Grange, Mo.
- 9 Ellery Farmer, b Sept 4, 1879; graduated at US Military Academy at
West Point NY in 1903. He was an Infantry officer of the regular army;
served in the Philippines, Canal Zone and in France and Germany during
and after WW I. Served at many stations in the US. Retired in 1944 after
45 years of active service. He compiled this family record with the assistance
of others; he was a member of SAR, Missouri Society Medal No 3592. He married
Grace Cartwright Griffing, Aug 11, 1930 of Shelter Island, NY., daughter
of George Ashby Griffing of Riverhead, Long Island, NY, and Lula Terry
Griffing of Shelter Island, NY Grace Griffing Farmer was a direct descendant,
in the ninth generation of Jasper Griffing of Wales who came to Massachusetts
in 1640, then later settled in Southold, Long Island, NY, where he is buried.
He has many descendants living in Suffolk Co., NY. Grace G Farmer has assisted
greatly in the preparing and recording of this record. Residence after
