SMITH, ROBERT W. (1814-1851). Robert W. Smith, Indian fighter andsoldier at the battle of San Jacinto,qv was born in North Carolina onDecember 9, 1814, and came to Texas in 1836. He enlisted in the Texasarmy on March 6, 1836, served as a first lieutenant in Capt. Hayden S.Arnold'sqv company at San Jacinto, was discharged on June 6, 1838, andlater served as a captain in the Cherokee War (1839). Smith iscredited with firing the shot that killed Chief Bowlqv at the battleof the Neches;qv Bowl, according to some sources, was responsible forthe death of Smith's father-in-law. Smith took Bowl's sword, a gift tothe chief from Sam Houston,qv and presented it to the Masonic lodge atHenderson. The sword was lent to Col. James H. Jonesqv during theCivil War,qv returned to the Masonic lodge, and finally presented in1890 to the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. During theRegulator-Moderator Warqv Smith was a captain in the company of Gen.James Smith,qv and in 1845 he became the first sheriff of Rusk County.Smith married Mary Jane Watkins in 1837; they had four children. Hedied in 1851 and was buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Van ZandtCounty, on land donated by him for church and cemetery purposes.

Was a 1st Lieutenant in the Infantry of the Nacogdoches Volunteers.Was at the Battle of San Jacinto, April 21, 1836. Killed Chief Bowlesin the Cherokee War on July 16, 1839 at the Neches River near Athens.
