IUI (intrauterine insemination)I have just celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary. We tried to get pregnant for 7 years. For 3 years of that it was mostly not trying to prevent pregnancy. In 1993 we seeked medical help. We went to my ob/gyn. We were put on clomid at the maximum amount possible. We had absolutely no ovulation. My husband of course was checked and everything was perfect with him. It was totally my problem, not his. We were referred to a infertility clinic. Their web address is:

I began taking Pergonal injections. At my first u/s after the week of injections I was horrified to learn that no follicles had grown. We needed to do another course. We tried this for three months until we had no more money left. So we decided to stop. We went back to believing that we would never have children. In February 1996 we decided to adopt. We went to an agency and realized that the cost was outrageus. Two weeks after our trip to the agency, a cousin of my husband told us that she had found us a baby to adopt that would be born in May. The birth mother was only 15, she did not want the baby and neither did her mother. She had insurance and we would only have to pay legal fees. Everything was perfect, until she changed her mind at the beginning of May. I was devestated. It was at that time that I decided to try IF treatments again. I called the same IF clinic and my first appointment was is June. Luckily this time I was working at a company that paid for IF medication. I only had to pay the $6.00 co-pay.
The Dr.'s put me on Metrodin injections. This time they gave me a tip. Don't put the injections in my butt, put them in my upper thigh. It seems that since I am overweight, the Pergonal 3 years prior was lost in fat and never made it to the muscle. The first attempt I had tons of follicles, but no pregnancy. We tried again in August. The clinic likes you to skip a month in between. Still no pregnancy. We skipped October and went back in November this time the Metrodin would be supplemented with an IUI, still no pregnancy. I was giving up hope. By this time, my job had ended and I no longer had the insurance to pay for the medication. We had hoarded enough that we only needed about $200.00 worth of meds to do one more try. This would be our final attempt, because we just couldn't afford it. My husband has so many college loans to repay.
On February 13, 1997 I had my last IUI. It was a lot more painful than the last one. I laid there for a long time until the nurse came back and said I could go home. From the instant I had the IUI I didn't feel good. By Feb. 22, I was hospitalized for Severe Ovarian Hyperstimulation. I was miserable. I gained 45 lbs in 10 days. I couldn't eat, couldn't walk, couldn't sleep. I wanted to die. The nurse kept telling me that all the patients she had with Hyperstimulation, all ended up being pregnant because the body was producing too much hcg. I didn't want to get my hopes up. On March 1, 1997, they said I had a positive pregnancy test. I came home from the hospital on March
4, 1997. I went to the RE on March 18 and that's when we knew it was twins. It was a rough pregnancy. I was diabetic and had to take insulin twice a day. I was on bed rest at 20 weeks, and my girls decided to come 9 weeks early. They were born on September 5, 1997 due date was November 6, 1997.
Emma Claire was 2 lbs 13 oz, and was the healthiest. She came out breathing on her own. Hannah Rose was 3 lbs 5 oz and was not doing well. Her apgar score at birth was only a 1. She had to be on a respirator for 6 days. They came home on October 6, 1997. Today they are happy, healthy, and beautiful. I am very lucky to have them and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
IVF (in vitro fertilization)After six years of IF, with a lap for endo and five failed IUI's, I got pg on my first IVF attempt. And with only one embryo!! They retrieved 15 eggs, only 4 were mature, two fertilized and only one grew. But today that one embryo is 4 mos. old and just starting to roll over! I wish that I had some pictures for you, I will have to get some on floppy disks. My IVF experience was wonderful, neither the retrieval or the transfer was a very big deal, and the outcome was certainly worth it! I hope that I can get pg on my own the next time, but either way, I can't wait for #2!

I am a DES daughter and cannot carry due to a very small uterus, and a very small cervix due to cervical cancer and a cone biopsy. We were told by 2 different Drs. that we needed a special person to help bring our baby into the world-that the chances would be very small that I would go to term with a pregnancy.
Diana, our SM just happens to be the parent of one of my students..I teach 2nd grade. SHe too had some fertility problems (Ovulation) and with the help of pergonal 9 years ago gave birth to a set of triplet girls!!! When she heard of my search for this special person...she said "Let me do this for you, because I can. She know the awful feelings that nfertility brings!!
It took us 2 IVF cycles-the second time was the charm :-)) On July 14th we transfered 2 embryos-1-9 celland 1-4 celled and on March 20th, 1998...Lindsey Patricia was born :-)))
Surrogacy really works.. People like me thank G-d for people like Diana!
