At its most basic level, a mitzvah is a commandment, something that we are as Jews required to do. One Mitzvah, 613 MitzvotThere are said to be 613 mitzvot, or specific commandments, in our Torah. Some of these mitzvot are positive (e.g., honor your father and your mother); others are negative (e.g., do not boil an animal in its mother's milk). Some seem like nothing more than common sense (E.g., do not murder); others seem a little odd to modern sensibilities (e.g., ).
