Tikkun Leyl Shavuot

At Shavuot, we celebrate the giving of the Torah. To emphasize our readiness to receive the Torah, some communities conduct an all-night study session the evening before Shavuot. This study session, or tikkun was originally devoted to Torah study alone, and special anthologies drawn from original texts were compiled so that the entire Torah cycle could be addressed in one night.

In our community, the Tikkun covers a wide variety of topics -- scripture, liturgy, philosophy, ideology, ritual, art, current events, Israel, Jewish humor, history, music, dance, etc. It becomes a social event in which learning is combined with food, discussion, friends, and lots of caffeine. Those of us who last until dawn (between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m. at this time of year), will daven Shacharit together and go home. We don't know about the other participants in the Tikkun, but we don't plan to come back for the main service at 9:00 a.m. that day.
