Husband's Notes[UL: THOMAS W. MERCER IS KILLED BODY WAS FOUND LAST FRIDAY NEAR ILLINOIS CENTRAL TRACK:UL] Thos. W. Mercer for many years a resident of this city, met a terrible death last Thursday night while in route from Odin to Centralia. Early Friday morning the body of an unknown man was discovered lying by the I.C. railroad track at Harvey's crossing North of Central City. Coroner Foster of Centralia, was notified of the fact and upon his orders the body was removed to the Haussier undertaking rooms at Centralia. An inquest followed and an effort to identify the body of the dead man but the only article found on the body was a cheap watch bearing the name of an Indianapolis firm in the case. A telegram to them brought the reply that they had no knowledge of the party. The body was kept in the undertaking rooms until Saturday morning and during that time no one visiting the rooms were able to identify the remains mand under the instruction of coroner Foster the body was buried in Centralia Cemetary. During this time the family of Mr. Mercer had been making inquiry to his possible whereabouts. Developments proved that Thursday afternoon Mr. Mercer had bought a ticket to Sandoval and no one had seen him since that time. Inquiry along the line developed the fact that Mercer left the train at Odin presumedly to go to Centralia. After staying in Odin some hours it is presumed that he started to walk to Centralia and while near Harvey's crossing either attempted to board a freight train or was run down by one of the many trains on the line. Just how the accident happened will never be known as the train crews assert that they have no knowledge of the matter. Hearing of the unidentified body at Centralia members of the Mercer family went to that city Sunday evening and after hearing description of the general appearance and clothing of the dead man were convinced that he was none other than their father. Upon their suggestion Coroner Foster had the body eboard a freight train or was run down by one of the many trains on the line.
