Another story, courtesy of Capt Mansell. It seems that the SUNFISH had found a convoy, tracked it, got into firing position, and sent a few "tin fish" into two fat marus. Obviously, the Japs were more than a little upset at this chain of events and were making the SUNFISH's day miserable.
The SUNFISH received 185 depth charges in a series of attacks. What impressed Capt Mansell was this. Dad, being the QuarterMaster, was responsible for making tic marks in a notebook so that he could later record, in the log book, just how many depth charges they took. Capt Mansell
said that dad was too cool under fire in that, he was sitting in a corner of the conning tower reading a book as the Jap destroyers came in on an attack run. The splash of depth charges on the way down, Dad would put down his book, pick up his notebook, and record the explosions. They were driven
down to 485 feet; which is 185 feet PAST their safe diving depth. Capt Mansell also had this to say. "That the SUNFISH took WILD chances. That they went into shallow water, got into gunfights that they shouldn't have, and that the SUNFISH was not the best boat in the fleet but that
she was definately in the top 10%." I agree. Thanks, sir, hope to hear more from you soon.
