1. John¹ Hughes¹ was born circa 1813 in North Carolina; Papers of the Frieden Luthern Church transcribed in "1800-1853 Frieden Lutheran Church Book", page 4, has the following entry:
John Huse and wife their son John was born the 10th of Dec 1813. baptised Aug. the 14th 1814. Sponsors are the parents (English)
I don't know that this is the same John, but birthdate and geographical area are very near. Also on this page is Johannes BUHN (Boon), Heinrich Tickel, and Daniel Kachelriess. The Frieden Lutheran Church is located in Guilford County near the Alamance County line.

Children of John¹ Hughes and Eleanor Rumbley were as follows:

+ 2 i. Amanda² Hughes was born circa 1836 in North Carolina, daughter of John Hughes and Eleanor Rumbley. She married (--?--) Jones before 1860. She married William K. Montgomery on August 9, 1860 in Smyth County, Virginia.

+ 3 ii. Alfred C. Hughes was born in February, 1836 in North Carolina. He married Elizabeth (--?--).

+ 4 iii. Sarah Frances Hughes was born on June 25, 1838 in Smyth County, Virginia. She married Thomas Clayburn Taylor on December 8, 1859 in Smyth County, Virginia.

+ 5 iv. Brooks Washington Hughes was born on August 28, 1842 in North Carolina. He married Nancy A. Montgomery on April 5, 1860 in Smyth County, Virginia.

6 v. Riley C. Hughes¹^,¹^,¹ was born circa 1845 in North Carolina, son of John Hughes and Eleanor Rumbley.¹

7 vi. Delilah Jane Hughes¹^,¹^,¹ was born on February 26, 1848 in Smyth County, Virginia , daughter of John Hughes and Eleanor Rumbley.¹ She married Joseph Silas Rimmer on December 24, 1866 in Smyth County, Virginia.¹^,⁷ She died on December 31, 1935 in Wise County, Virginia , at age 87.¹

8 vii. Catherine B. Hughes¹^,¹^,¹ was born circa 1851 in Smyth County, Virginia , daughter of John Hughes and Eleanor Rumbley.¹ She married Franklin T. Little on May 5, 1870 in Smyth County, Virginia.¹ She married Franklin T. Little on May 12, 1870 in Smyth County, Virginia.⁸
