11 October 1888, A Father Killed by His Son

A terrible murder occurried in Faucetts township, a mile or two distant from McCray last Friday evening. The victim was Abel Rippy, aged about 63 years, and the perpetrator of the awful deed was his son Ab L. Rippy, a young man some 23 years of age. The son had been on a drunken debauch. He was riding horseback and returning home turned the horse in the corn field. The old man remonstrated with him and told him he had a mind not to let him have the horse anymore. The son became enraged and tried to borrow his brothers pistol. In this he failed; but stepped in the house and got his shotgun, with which he shot the father, killing him instantly. In the space of ten minutes Mr. G. T. Hurtle, Deputy Sheriff, was on hand and arrested young Rippy. Mr. Hurtle kept him bound at a tobacco barn all night where he was curing tobacco and brought him to Graham and placed him in Jail Saturday morning.
