Comrade Aaron Behymer, who was born the 13th day of August, A.D. 1839 in Woodland Township, County of Fulton, State of Illinois, enlisted at Peoria, Illinois on August 13th, 1861 in Company "G" 11th Regiment of Illinois Cavalry. He held the rank of private until discharged in May, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky at the close of the war. The first battle he was engaged in was Shiloh. He participated in the battles at Kennesaw Mt., Goldsburough, Sherman's March to the Sea, and many others. Aaron was taken prisoner at Pochahontis, Tennessee on Sept. 26, 1862 by General Pinsten, was in prison at Vicksburg, Mississippi, was released on Parole and went again into his company. The fall of Vicksburg and Fort Donaldson were the most important events in his service.
William Behymer joined the Army in 1861 or 1862. Three articles agree that he was with the 101st Indiana Volunteer Infantry;
An obit of William written by his son John Oliver Behymer states he was in Co. E and served in the battles of Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, Resacca, Lookout Mountain, and "was in Sherman's March to the sea". John also stated he "was a stout, rugged man, before he went into the army, but has been a physical wreck ever since he came out...".
The obituary of John O. Behymer includes historical information on his parents, and claims William was mustered in with Co. H of the 101st, then was transferred to Co. E. where he remained until the end of the war, rising in rank to Sergeant;
An historical narrative of William's wife Martha states that William enlisted in 1862 and served as orderly sergeant in Co. R of the 101st. It also states his death in 1890 was a result of "wounds and ailments contracted while in the line of duty";
In a 1967 letter to my Grandmother, Ralph Behymer of Cincinnati, Ohio, reports that information provided by the government states that William nearly lost a foot in an accident while building a "breastworks" near Atlanta. (I can't imagine being able to "march with Sherman to the sea" after receiving such an injury.);
In a personal narrative, Mrs. Irene Graham Behymer (grandaughter of William, daughter of Perry) states "My Grandfather, Wm Behymer, was a Captain in the union army during the Civil War. When he returned to Rigdon [Indiana], his health was not good".
