A doula is a woman who has been trained to act as a professional birth attendant.
She is not a nurse, a midwife, or a doctor, although *some* doulas have had some
medical training. Doulas have either been trained by a professional organization
or by experience. Studies have shown that by having a doula assist you at your birth,
you can decrease your chances of having unnecessary interventions such as episiotomy
and c-section and increase your chances at having a natural birth. If having an
unmedicated birth is not your goal, a doula can help you get more satisfaction
out of your birth by helping your husband support you better, supporting your husband,
and helping you recover faster. There has also been a study that showed that couples
who were attended by a doula showed greater marital satisfaction six months later.
