If you are serious about having a bird as a pet, you must do some
researching first. You will need to read
about the bird or birds
you are considering. Not all birds may be suitable for you household.
You must take into consideration, your children, other pets in
the house, what type of plants are in your house if the bird is
allowed to be out of its cage, and so forth. You need to study
the birds temperament and characteristics. For example, Sun
Conures and Cockctoos can be very loud and noisey and some will
end up very unhappy owners of thier birds.
You will need to know what type of food to feed your bird, because
different birds require differnet diets. You will need to know how to
handle and treat your specific breed of bird. You will have to
pick out the proper size of cage with the proper size of wire
and spacing between the wires depending on what type of bird you
are getting. You have to decide on the proper size of toys to
give you pet bird, again depending on what breed of bird you
have.
This is a must. You need to find a good reputable avian
veterinarian. You never know when something can happen and
you will need to get your bird to the vet, and fast. I have
heard of many horror stories, but will give just a few as an
example. Your bird flys into a ceiling fan,(please turn them
off when your bird is out of its cage). Your dog or cat attacks
the bird. Your bird eats from a houseplant that is poisonous
to it. Your small child hurts the bird, etc. As you can see,
many accidents can occur.
Your avian veterinarian can also help you with the grooming and
health issue of your bird. Such as clipping the wings and toenails
and what to watch for to know if your bird is not feeling well.
This can be tricky, because birds by nature try not to show it
when they are sick and weak, for the other birds will pick on
them. You really have to know your birds normal behavior. It
is usually through the changing of your birds behavior, that
you know something is wrong and it needs to go to the vet. If
you do not recognize this change, your bird can have a life
threatening illness and die before you even know it.
And last but not least, please purchase your bird from a very
reputable Pet Shop or reputable local breeder. There are
many unhealthy smuggled birds out there which carry alot of
different diseases. The whole smuggling process of bringing
in these illegal birds is very cruel. Please, know where your
bird came from before you purchase it. We hope to someday
put the bird smugglers out of buisness!!! Also, when you
purchase your bird, take it to the vet to have a checkup
done on it so you will know you are bringing home a happy,
healthy bird. You may also want to subscribe to a bird
magezine such as "Bird Talk". This is a excellent source
of information on birds.
